Job Summary
The Lead Gardener and Grounds Maintenance, performs the tasks of a Gardener, snow removal, equipment operations connected with the maintenance of the campus grounds and supports all campus wide events. Assists manager with planning and scheduling of the Institute's campus-wide maintenance program; to include landscape design, everyday task coordination, greenhouse operations and project work for each campus area. Work in concert with other leads to support campus wide events. Serve as team leader for crew of assigned staff. Act on behalf of the manager during their absence.

Minimum Qualifications
   » Associates Degree in Horticulture or related field with 5 years field practice in landscape maintenance including practice with training and operating landscape maintenance equipment, irrigation and snow removal equipment
   » Or a significant combination of education, training and directly related practice
   » Valid US driver's license
   » Valid New York State Pesticide Technician's or Applicator's License in category 3a. or the capability to obtain within one year of appointment
   » significant combinations of education, training and practice may be considered.

Minimum Knowledge, expertise, and Abilities
   » capability to independently operate all landscape, turf maintenance and snow removal equipment
   » knowledge of irrigation systems, trouble shooting and capability to make minor repairs
   » capability to properly mix and apply appropriate pesticides, calibrate spreaders and sprayers
   » capability to identify plant material with the knowledge of cultural requirements and growth habits.
   » Thorough knowledge of planting techniques
   » capability to operate and train others on all landscape, turf maintenance and snow removal equipment
   » capability to provide day-to-day direction to staff and lead projects
   » capability to read, write, and perform arithmetic functions
   » Basic computer expertise including Microsoft and job specific software
   » capability work independently and as part of a team
   » Excellent customer service expertise
   » capability to communicate effectively
   » Must have the capability to work flexible hours which may include, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays

TravelLocal travel between campus locations only

Driving
Driving a Rensselaer vehicle for non-passenger use
