Job Summary

Summary:
The visual designer will bring Rensselaer stories to life through on-brand and visually appealing designs for websites and other visual media. tasks include brainstorming creative ideas with researchers and department heads, developing visual concepts for approval, and collaborating with IT developers to prosperously integrate graphic designs. The visual designer will conceptualize engaging and forward-thinking storytelling practices for web and other channels for the Institute, as well as special projects (i.e. signature events, campaign landing pages, etc.). The visual designer manages the web user practice (UX) strategy, and prepares and produces digital imagery and media elements for web and other media.

Specific Responsibilities:
• Apply contemporary digital design principles, data/analytics and strategic insights to the front-end design of proprietary web practices that elevate the Rensselaer brand and enhance user practice (UX).
• Manage content and ensure that it is timely and significant across all the Institute sites and digital and social platforms.
• Research, create and/or develop or curate content (copy, photography and video) for web sites and publications; edit and optimize images, graphics, and video for online distribution.
• Assume primary stewardship for key web properties, such as the external homepage (www.rpi.edu), the President's pages, the news site, top level Institute sites and other sites as assigned.
• Manage web-related analytics; establish and measure KPIs for select web sites, as well as Google Analytics for targeted web pages in support of ROI tracking for digital campaigns.
• Provide strategic vision, planning, and execution of web communications that is timely and best practice, to strengthen Rensselaer branding and reputation.
• Partner with Web Services to develop and maintain a design system that will help provide efficiency and consistency in the design and development of websites and digital properties.
• Partner with Web Services to implement best practices to ensure a smooth workflow from design to development teams.
• Other tasks as assigned.

General Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree in web design or similar course of study
• Five years of professional practice in a directly related position within a university, agency or other complex environment:
• practice using a content management system (CMS) to build and manage web sites.
• Strong knowledge of user practice, web project planning and search engine optimization (SEO).
• Proficiency in HTML, CSS, Adobe Photoshop, Google Analytics, and current web and digital marketing technologies.
• capability to use data and strategic insights to make good decisions/judgement calls and capability to glean input through collaboration.
• capability to manage multiple priorities in a complex environment.
• capability to communicate and collaborate effectively with colleagues, campus community, and external audiences.
• capability to assess needs and create site architecture, navigation, and workflows to meet those needs.
• knowledge of uscapability and accessibility principles and testing.
• Advanced knowledge of the technical and aesthetic aspects of web site front-end design and of current web design and web communication standards and best practices.

Starting income/Rate
Expected hiring range: $85,000 - $90,000
Pay transparency disclosure: The selected candidate's income will be determined located on factors that include the available budget, internal equity, and the final candidate's qualifications, practice, education and other job-related credentials. This hiring range is provided as Rensselaer's good faith estimate of the expected hiring range at the time of posting.
