Job Summary
The Director, Export Control and Research Security will lead and coordinate efforts across the university to manage compliance with both the export and research security requirements, including development and updating of policies and procedures for compliance. The Director will also lead and coordinate education efforts across the Institute's research enterprise. The Director will coordinate closely with other offices at the Institute, including the Office of the Vice President of Research, the Office of the Provost, the Office of International Student Support and Services, as well as the Divisions of the Chief Information Office, Human Resources, and others as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications
   » Bachelor's degree and at least five (5) years of practice in export control compliance or research compliance.
   » Broad knowledge of the compliance requirements of federal, state, and other regulatory agencies.
   » Due to U.S. export control regulations, candidates must be: (1) U.S. citizens or nationals; (2) permanent residents; (3) asylees or refugees; or (4) individuals otherwise described as "protected individuals" according to Title 8 U.S. Code Section 1324b(a)(3)(b).
   » Commitment to obtaining export control certification specific to higher education industry within one year, as courses are available
   » significant combinations of education, training and practice may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications
   » Master's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Public Affairs, Engineering, Physical Sciences, related fields, or law degree.
   » JD. degree; M.S. /Ph.D. degree in a science OR engineering field OR international trade controls.
   » Direct export control compliance and research security practice in an institution of higher education.
   » practice in the administration of research compliance.
   » practice leading projects involving multiple units in an organization.
 

Minimum Knowledge, expertise, and Abilities
   » An broad knowledge of federal and institutional regulations on export controls, including but not limited to EAR, ITAR, and OFAC sanctions and their applications within a research-intensive higher education environment.
   » Demonstrated capability to conduct comprehensive, detailed analyses of complex regulations, effectively and efficiently assess factual situations under those regulations, and develop appropriate recommendations for action.
   » High level of competency with systems applications and databases.
   » Excellent written and verbal communication expertise.
   » Excellent interpersonal and organizational development expertise.
   » Proven leadership abilities expertise and practice, with the capability to be flexible, tactful, and diplomatic.
   » Well-developed analytical and problem-solving expertise; capability to innovate.
   » Demonstrated capability to interact with faculty, staff, and students in a highly diverse, multicultural environment

Starting income/Rate
Expected hiring range:  $150,000 - $200,000
Pay transparency disclosure: The selected candidate's income will be determined located on factors that include the available budget, internal equity, and the final candidate's qualifications, practice, education and other job-related credentials. This hiring range is provided as Rensselaer's good faith estimate of the expected hiring range at the time of posting.
