Job Summary The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist, reporting to the Director of Environmental, Health, Safety, and Risk Management, will provide professional and technical EH&S skills across campus for internal and external customers. The EHS Specialist will supervise EHS programs and be proactive in implementing best practices, minimizing risk, and promoting a culture of environmental stewardship and safety all over the organization. Minimum Qualifications » A Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health & Safety or a related field » Five years of practice in environmental health and safety and regulatory compliance » Valid US Driver's License A significant combination of education, practice, and certifications may be substituted for a degree. Preferred Qualifications » Formal training in HAZWOPER, RCRA, DOT, OSHA, DEP, EPA, and NFPA regulations » Training or operational practice with environmental, safety, or quality management systems, such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, or OSHA VPP Minimum expertise, Skills, and Abilities » expertise of current federal and state EHS regulations and emerging laws and trends. » Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills. » expertise of proper procedures for responding to emergencies involving hazardous chemical exposures. » capability to provide training to other personnel on Environmental Health and Safety practices and programs. » Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Windows, or other technical tools in completing assignments. » capability to influence and coordinate EH&S activity across Rensselaer Portfolios, resolve problems promptly, and develop alternate solutions when necessary. » capability to organize/prioritize existing resources and incorporate new information, as needed, to implement the most effective solutions. » capability to communicate clearly and courteously. » Strong planning, organizing, and practical time management skills. » capability to work independently and as part of a team. » capability to demonstrate commitment to higher education and work with a diverse population. » Effective written and verbal communication skills. » capability to work effectively under pressure and meet established goals and objectives. » capability to work in fast paced, rapidly changing environment.
