Gift Shop Manager - Adams Wallkill

General Purpose:
The manager’s main purpose is to promote the above. The Gift Shop Manager is to create a pleasant shop atmosphere and provide exceptional customer service while superviseing the department’s organization, staffing, sales and profitcapability through merchandising, inventory/ expense control, and management expertise. 
Principal Responsibilities:
   » Ensure that each customer receives outstanding customer service by providing a customer friendly environment, including greeting and acknowledging customers, maintaining outstanding standards, solid product knowledge and assisting customers with their questions 
   » Achieve profit margin and payroll goals set by store management 
   » Generate a product base that attracts customers concerned with quality 
   » Control inventory shrinkage, waste, production level, expenses and payroll hours 
   » Ensure appropriate merchandise stock levels, presentations & signage 
   » Train and develop department staff; develop adjunct to completely back you up 
   » Set the tone and example for employee morale; continuously seek to improve it 
   » Delegate work to improve and maintain smooth and efficient department operation 
   » Communicate with staff and store management on a regular basis; give praise to employees 
   » Be familiar with and adhere to all laws, i.e., labor, unit pricing, safety, sanitation, etc. 
   » Be aware of safety procedures and maintain an employee and customer safe department; abide by the Adams 
Specific Tasks & tasks:
   » Manager must be friendly & personable to set tone and example to employees 
   » Be available for customer questions & complaints 
   » Be friendly to customers & get to know regular customers by name 
   » Seek cooperation of other managers on store policies 
   » Meet with sales reps to order merchandise 
   » Occasional trips to trade shows & show rooms 
   » Checking in merchandise, pricing it and making sure it’s entered into the computer via the scanning department 
   » Order & display merchandise 
   » Write transfers on products shipped to other stores 
   » Check all packing lists against invoices and okay for payment 
   » Attend meetings called by upper management 
   » Setting up sales & putting signs up 
   » Sending invoices to main office in a timely fashion 
   » Sharing work that has to be done with co-workers 
   » Gift bagging 
   » Cleaning up in the evening & making sure if not done at night it’s finished in the morning 
   » Listening to customer input & products they’re interested in 
   » Bringing any concerns or worries to management 
   » Friendly and polite while assisting customers on the phone 
   » Ticketing & writing up stock 
   » Displaying merchandise 
   » Responsible for hiring & firing of employees 
   » Employee evaluations 
   » Make rate changes 
   » Develop employees’ interest in the business 
   » Keep payroll down & work on improving sales 
Personnel Related tasks:
   » Schedule, supervise and train personnel in your department; develop an adjunct 
   » Post work schedule for department employees at least 2 days prior to new week; monitor attendance and breaks 
   » Create schedule to ensure that you or your adjunct are in the department during busy periods 
   » Hire and fire all personnel under your control with store manager’s approval 
   » Meet with your employees when necessary about department and company policies, rules and problems. Keep them abreast of department changes in products or displays 
   » Delegate areas of responsibility to your personnel when possible. Try to convey a feeling of satisfaction in a job well done 
   » Educate your staff regarding products and how to handle and display properly 
   » Solicit suggestions from your staff regarding improvements and changes in the department 
   » Be certain all new personnel have some form of training or break-in period. Assign new hires to work with your most practiced staff members. 
   » Insist your personnel have proper attire and are well groomed 
   » Consistently give your staff positive and valuable feedback about their performance 
   » Conduct employee evaluations annually or more often if necessary 
   » Make pay changes on a timely basis, usually once a year, and get store manager approval 
   » Impress on your employees the importance of keeping their income information confidential 
   » Always reprimand in private, not on the floor & not in front of other employees or customers 
   » When correcting an employee, terminating an employee or discussing something sensitive, always have another manager, adjunct manager or Human Resources with you as a witness. If you are speaking with the opposite sex, always have a manager of the employee’s same sex as your witness. 
   » Always praise all of Adams’ stores to create high company morale 
   » Physical Requirements 
   » capability to freely access all areas of the store including selling floor, stock area and register area 
   » capability to communicate effectively communicate with customers 
   » capability to move or handle merchandise all over the department generally weighing up to 25 pounds 
   » capability to assist with the unloading of merchandise brought to the department 
   » capability to move fixtures or merchandise for displays 
   » capability to climb up & down step ladder/stool to set up or remove merchandise from walls 
   » capability to work varied hours/ days to supervise department operations 
   » capability to stand for long periods of time 
Mental/Reasoning General Requirements:
   » Must be patient & knowledge, yet assertive when necessary 
   » Must be able to listen objectively to employee concerns. Know when to deal with these concerns alone or when to seek help of the HR department. 
   » Communicate effectively with customers, co-workers, and managers
