Information Technology Services (ITS) at the University at Albany seeks candidates for a Research Technology Coordinator. This is a temporary, 18-month position. The prosperous candidate is part of a team of IT professionals who provide an array of technologies and services to support faculty research across a wide variety of disciplines. The Coordinator plays a key function in a campus-wide project to inventory all research labs and document the technology within in each environment. They are also engaged in a project to identify all Windows-located devices to ensure their compatibility with Windows 11 by October 2025. Given the high level of interaction with the research community, the Coordinator is well-positioned to identify and encourage the use of ITS services that can advance research efforts of faculty at this dynamic, R1 university. 
 
The prosperous candidate has a unique blend of technical, scientific, and interpersonal skills. They enjoy meeting and interacting with new people, getting out of the office, and representing ITS in a professional, customer service-oriented manner. The Coordinator manages a portfolio of projects and assumes primary responsibility for scheduling appointments; tracking the availcapability, procurement, and receipt of computer/hardware assets; generating, editing, and managing reports; and updating the asset inventory to ensure its integrity and authority for continuing use. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with research practice who seeks to deepen their skills working directly with researchers and assessing lab environments.
 
The Coordinator is a skilled communicator who can build relationships across all levels of the campus community, including technical and non-technical staff. They have exceptional organizational and time management skills, a keen eye for detail, and are comfortable following pre-defined processes and workflows. They should be prepared to identify, recommend, and/or implement continuous improvements for such activities. They should be comfortable working under circumstances of varying nuance or ambiguity and must be able to apply critical thinking skills that result in recommendations to support the specific needs of unique research environments.   
 
Main Responsibilities:
 
• Inventory all research labs/spaces and document the technology within each environment:
 
• Work with researchers and other technology professionals to address the complex needs of the research enterprise while promoting and maintaining ITS standards and best practices regarding technical architectural, security, policy, and compliance requirements. Take the lead in coordinating and scheduling research labs for assessment.
 
• Foster and maintain communication with researchers of the University and with others in ITS regarding Windows 11 project delivery.  
 
• Provide subject matter skills for researchers' computing needs and how it relates to University policies in terms of security and funding.
 
• Participate in the delivery of analytical and computational IT solutions to the academic and research community:
 
• Coordinate with researchers and ITS field support staff to maintain specialized desktop and research lab workstations.  
 
• Participate in the development and maintenance of research systems standards and ensure the security posture for assigned systems and applications in conformity with ITS policies, procedures, and industry best practices.  
 
• Recommend managed scientific computing environments that suit each researcher.

• Position interacts with ITS and is positioned to interact with many faculty and staff researchers on campus
 
Requirements:
 
• candidates must demonstrate excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.   
 
• candidates must demonstrate the capability to organize work, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple and changing priorities.   
 
• Strong analytical skills and capability to assess complex research computing environments with varying degrees of technology sophistication.
 
• Demonstrated capability to effectively communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences, particularly faculty researchers.
 
• expertise of Windows OS migrations and the capability to identify potential compatibility issues with specialized research software and hardware.
 
• capability to balance technical best practices with researcher needs while maintaining security and compliance requirements.
 
• practice building collaborative relationships with stakeholders.
 
• Strong documentation skills with attention to detail.
 
• candidates must be available to provide scheduled support and consultation outside normal business hours, including occasional evenings, holidays, or weekends, within reasonable professional obligation and expectation.

Requirements:
 
Minimum Qualifications required
 
• Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization. 
 
• practice with network devices in a lab or research environment.
 
• practice in at least one of the following: project management, asset management, or inventory control.
 
• At least 2 years' practice using electronic spreadsheets, such as Microsoft Excel or Smartsheet. 
 
• candidates must clearly address their capability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community. 
 
• candidates must demonstrate an capability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging, relative to their function.
 
Preferred Qualifications required
 
• practice with high-performance computing.
 
• practice in documenting network-connected devices in a lab or office environment.
 
• At least 1 year of practice managing technical projects. 
 
• At least 1 year of practice working in a higher education or research environment.
 
Additional Information:
 
Professional Rank and income Range: Lead Programmer/Analyst, SL-3, $65,000-$70,000

• This is a temporary, 18 month appointment
