Mortgage Underwriter

We are currently seeking an practiced Mortgage Underwriter to join our Mortgage team. 
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
   » Review, evaluate and audit mortgage files submitted using independent, sound judgement and expertise of investor guidelines ; assure compliance to guidelines located on salary, credit, collateral and assets.
   » Approve or deny loan applications; make appropriate counter-offers and recommendations when possible.
   » Prepare and review documentation, such as commitment letters, denials, etc.
   » Assist with the cross-training efforts of department personnel.
   » Assist with reports as required; assist management as directed; perform other related tasks as assigned.
Performance Measurements:
   » Assures member service is top priority; treats members and other employees professionally with courtesy and respect; upholds MHV Service Standards.
   » Uses sound judgement and expertise of guidelines to review mortgage files and approve accordingly.
   » Remains proficient with both automated and manual underwriting, including specific documentation and guidelines that apply to each.
   » Maintains a thorough expertise of mortgage products, guidelines and policies for our investors (FNMA, FHA, SONYMA, MHV, etc.)
   » Reviews files assigned to department personnel in an effort to troubleshoot potential problems; assists with the workload of other mortgage personnel to assure smooth work flow and consistency of the department's output.
   » Makes valid suggestions regarding improvements to processes, forms, or functions in work area.
   » Is a good team player; promotes a positive, productive and supportive work environment.
   » Stays abreast of current trends affecting the financial services industry; has an overall expertise of the credit union, its policies and procedures. Continually expands expertise and develop expertise.
Individual must have strong organizational expertise, as well as excellent verbal and written communication expertise. Time management and the capability to manage multiple workloads with prosperous results are also necessary.

   » Three years to five years of similar or related practice.
   » (1) A two-year college degree, or (2) completion of a specialized certification or licensing, or (3) completion of specialized training courses conducted by vendors, or (4) job-specific expertise acquired through an apprenticeship program.
   » Work involves much personal contact with others inside and/or outside the organization for the purpose of first-level conflict resolution, building relationships, and soliciting cooperation. Discussions involve a higher degree of confidentiality and discretion, requiring diplomacy and tact in communication.
   » Strong time management; capability to manage multiple workloads with prosperous results; capability to work independently; organizational expertise, excellent verbal and written communication expertise, listening expertise, problem analysis and problem resolution; above-average interpersonal expertise; strong computer expertise (i.e., Microsoft Office)
   » Is able to bend, sit, and stand in order to execute primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 20 lbs. Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in an emergency situation. Normal range of vision and hearing abilities required. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including computer terminals and keyboards, telephones, copiers, facsimiles, and calculators. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary. Must be able to work extended hours or travel off site whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.
   » Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with minimal noise.
   » Must be able to execute job functions independently or with limited supervision and work effectively either on own or as part of a team. Must be able to read and carry out various written instructions and follow oral instructions. Must be able to complete basic mathematical calculations, spell accurately, and understand computer basics. Must be able to speak clearly and deliver information in a logical and understandable sequence. Must be capable of dealing calmly and professionally with numerous different personalities from diverse cultures at various levels within and outside of the organization and demonstrate highest levels of customer service and discretion when dealing with the public. Must be able to execute responsibilities with composure under the stress of deadlines / requirements for extreme accuracy and quality and/or fast pace. Must be able to effectively handle multiple, simultaneous, and changing priorities. Must be capable of exercising highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters.
   » Work is generally performed within an office environment, primarily in a climate controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential. Sedentary, sitting, standing, walking, occasional lifting (overhead, waist level) from floor, bending, frequent near vision use for reading and computer use; standard office equipment available.
