What is an Electric Substation Design (ESD) Engineer?
This job posting is specific to our Substation Engineering & Operations Group. An Electric Substation Design Engineer performs engineering assignments related to the planning/scoping, evaluation, design, material procurement, construction, and performance of the company’s electric substations and connected facilities. The company is seeking practiced engineers in the Electric Substation area. Title/level is commensurate with practice.
What does an ESD Engineer do?
» Develops precise engineering designs for new electric distribution and transmission substations, as well as replacement of older substation infrastructure equipment with modern industry equipment including: High voltage power transformers, high voltage circuit breakers and disconnect switches, medium voltage electric switchgear as well as relay, control, and communications equipment.
» Completes projects from start to finish, including cost estimates, Work Order Authorization, CARE approval, equipment and site technical specifications, bidding and selection process, equipment ordering/contractor selection, drawing mark-up, drawing completion by Drafting, wire-checking and transmittal and construction assistance. Upon project completion, approves as-built changes and files project and instruction books
» Manages large, complex projects with critical timelines, demonstrating improvement with each assignment and an capability to incorporate multiple unscheduled projects/assignments without negative impacts to previously assigned work/goals
» Maintains effective working relationships with and is responsive to fellow employees, customers and all the Company’s external relationships.
» Serves as a mentor and coach to the next generation of power system engineers, comfortably providing supervision, guidance, teaching and mentoring to junior personnel in the department
» Represents Central Hudson in industry activities and organizations such as NYISO, EPRI, CEATI, NYSRC, NPCC, etc.
» Reports issues and recommendations in an objective, clear, and concise manner to peers, managers, and managers
» Identifies and promotes innovative solutions to engineering problems and/or enhancements to existing processes; investigates planning methods and procedures of the electric utility industry
» Provides support for storm restoration efforts
What does it take to be an ESD Engineer?
» Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and at least 5 years of work practice in an engineering function
» Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and the capability to lgain new computer software programs quickly
» Flexibility to multitask and operate under pressure in a fast-paced work environment
» Refined written/verbal communication expertise
» Excellent problem-solving expertise, with innovation in mind
» Strong analytical, organizational and quantitative expertise
» Must perform all tasks safely and design with safety in mind
» capability to voice opinions & lead discussions amongst industry groups
» Valid driver’s license
» Power system engineering practice
» Significant practice in the regulated Electric and/or Gas Utility industry; participation in utility industry/policy working group
