Kennel Attendant - Full Time

Kennel Attendants are core members of our shelter care team. The position is a physically demanding position, ensuring a clean and sanitary environment for animals. Kennel Attendants are responsible for cleaning shelter kennels, which requires manually scrubbing kennels that can be filled with urine and feces, and walking shelter dogs in all weather conditions, including dogs that are strong on leash without many manners that may jump and pull.  Candidates should be able to stand, walk, bend for duration of shift and tolerate all weather conditions.  Candidates should be have reliable transportion to work, including inclement weather and snow, even when schools and other businesses are closed.  Our shelter animals require care 365 days a year and we rely heavily on dependable employees to provide that care.  
All eligible candidates must be available to work a minimum of 1 day a weekend, if not both days.  Holidays are required.  Employees must be a minimum of 18 years of age.  
Shift schedules include 7 a.m. - 4 p.m.; 7 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.; 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m..  Candidates must have reliable transportation to be scheduled for all of those shift start and stop times.

Qualified candidates are those who:
   » Genuinely enjoy working with dogs and cats and are able to humanely handle them even when they are stressed, ill, or in pain; can compartmentalize and stay focused on current animals in care even when faced with upsetting situations
   » Can work unaffected in noisy environments where dogs are barking and cats are meowing
   » Are able to work shifts as early as 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
   » Show respect for other employees, volunteers, and visitors by assisting in a cheerful and professional manner
   » Possess organizational and motivational expertise as well as the capability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks at once
   » Can read, write, and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos
Physical General Requirements:
   » Valid Driver's License preferred.
   » Have physical strength and agility to lift pets and objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance and over 50 pounds with assistance
   » Able to tolerate extended periods of standing, walking, bending, etc., for duration of entire shift
   » Able to be outdoors in all weather conditions
   » Able to work in environments where exposed to contagious diseases; willing to get dirty and even wet
   » Able to be exposed short-term to potential irritants (cleaning chemicals, fumes, allergy triggers, etc.)
Major Areas of Responsibility for Kennel Attendants:
   » Execute and supervise the hour-to-hour assigned kennel operations
   » Maintain constant vigilance with proper animal handling and shelter safety
   » Work to maximize dog and cat comfort
   » supervise volunteers and public in kennel areas
   » Assist with preparing animals for scheduled veterinary visits, programs, and off-site activities
   » In conjunction with Standard Operating Procedures, everyday tasks and responsibilities will include activities such as: interacting with animals of all sizes in all stages of health/medical care; walking dogs of all breeds, sizes, temperaments, and illnesses; rotating dogs into outdoor pens as health and weather allow; feeding and watering animals, following special protocol if instructed by veterinary techs; scooping poop and cleaning litter boxes; cleaning and disinfecting shelter and equipment: cages, kennels, runs, pens, crates, and assigned rooms/areas; regular cleaning of toys, brushes, leashes, etc.; general housekeeping of shelter, including sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, washing, drying, folding, and storing laundry, washing and drying dishes, taking out garbage, etc.
   » Documenting animal illnesses or unusual behaviors for medical follow-up
   » Following proper safety protocol when using chemicals and cleaning supplies
   » Assisting other employees, volunteers, and visitors in a cheerful and respectful manner
   » Maintaining proper inventory levels of supplies, communicating needs as they arise; restocking supplies and storing donated items
   » Light maintenance of building (ex. weeding outside areas, snow shoveling, etc.)
After 90 days of employment, full-time employees are eligible to receive health insurance (employer/employee co-share montly premiums), dental and vision(employee paid premiums but very affordable), short-term discapability and life insurance (employer paid), paid vacation and personal days.
