Intermediate Software Developer - ETL:Randstad Canada

Job description:

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Intermediate Software Developer - ETL for an enterprise-level contract opportunity based in Toronto. In this role, you will take on a key business intelligence, data modeling, and reporting enablement capacity, specializing in designing, developing, and optimizing interactive dashboards and enterprise semantic models.

As an Intermediate Software Developer - ETL, you will bridge the gap between backend data pipelines, relational data stores, and operational decision-makers. Operating fully onsite in Toronto, you will translate complex business requirements into intuitive reporting solutions using Microsoft Power BI, DAX, and Power Query (M). You will collaborate closely with data engineers and business stakeholders to model dimensional data, enforce data governance, implement Row-Level Security (RLS), and ensure high-performance analytics delivery. This position demands a strong BI and data practitioner with solid SQL expertise, robust dimensional modeling skills, and a commitment to data accuracy and visualization best practices.

Location: Toronto, ON

Assignment Type: Onsite (5 days per week)

Contract Duration: 6-month contract (with potential for extension)

Advantages
Modern BI & Analytics Stack: Build advanced Power BI reports, enterprise semantic models, and DAX calculations.

Data Lakehouse Exposure: Opportunity to connect reports directly to Databricks SQL Warehouses and Azure Cloud Data services.

End-to-End Analytics Scope: Influence the full BI lifecycle from requirement gathering and ETL data prep to visualization and governance.

Enterprise Best Practices: Implement robust dimensional models, Row-Level Security (RLS), and data lineage tracking standards.

Responsibilities
Design, develop, test, and maintain interactive Power BI dashboards, operational reports, and analytical visualizations.

Author complex DAX measures, calculated columns, and queries to translate business logic into actionable insights.

Develop, test, and optimize data extraction and transformation steps using Power Query (M).

Architect, configure, and maintain enterprise semantic models and datasets adhering to star schema and dimensional modeling best practices.

Connect and integrate reporting assets across relational databases, SQL queries, enterprise data warehouses, APIs, and cloud repositories.

Collaborate with data engineering squads to ensure source data quality, structural consistency, and streamlined pipeline handoffs.

Conduct data validation, reconciliation audits, and user acceptance testing (UAT) to guarantee reporting precision and integrity.

Monitor report query performance, schedule automated data refreshes, and optimize workspace capacities.

Configure and administer security models, including the implementation and maintenance of Row-Level Security (RLS).

Maintain comprehensive documentation for reporting assets, data dictionaries, metadata catalogs, and data lineage mapping.

Provide user support, troubleshoot report discrepancies or performance latencies, and deliver training to end users on BI self-service features.

Participate actively in Agile sprint ceremonies, backlog refinements, and continuous delivery initiatives.

Qualifications
Core Technical & BI Requirements
Education: Degree or diploma in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, Business Intelligence, or a related field (or equivalent practical work experience).

Power BI & DAX: Demonstrated experience developing dashboards, paginated reports, and visual analytics using Microsoft Power BI, supported by strong expertise in DAX.

Power Query & M: Proven proficiency utilizing Power Query (M) for data cleansing, restructuring, and transformation workflows.

SQL & Relational Databases: Strong practical knowledge of SQL for querying, validating, and extracting data from relational database management systems.

Data Modeling: Deep understanding of dimensional modeling, star schema architecture, data warehousing concepts, and analytical data structuring.

Governance & Security: Familiarity with data governance principles, metadata repositories, data lineage tracing, and Row-Level Security (RLS) implementation.

Preferred Technical Assets & Capabilities
Databricks & Cloud Services: Hands-on experience connecting Power BI to Databricks SQL Warehouses, Lakehouse sources, or Azure Data Platform services (ADLS, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, or Microsoft Fabric) is an asset.

Enterprise/Public Sector Context: Prior experience supporting enterprise-grade analytics or reporting platforms within a large enterprise or public sector environment is an asset.

Scripting Languages: Exposure to Python, R, or other data analytics languages is considered a plus.

Agile & DevOps: Familiarity with Agile delivery frameworks and DevOps version control workflows.

Soft Skills & Delivery Attributes
Analytical Problem Solving: Strong critical thinking, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills to navigate complex datasets and resolve reporting bottlenecks.
